Can I Freeze Bed Bugs To Death?

ice-cubes2There’s good news and new news in that regard.  Plainly put, you can freeze bed bugs to death but it’s not as easy as once thought.

The good news…..According to the latest information from the Entomology Society of America (ESA), it is best to place bed bug infested items into plastic bags before you freeze them.  If you leave them there long enough (2-4 days at least) it is possible to kill bed bug eggs, nymphs and adults.

The new news…..According to ESA, in order to be effective, the freezer must be maintained at a temperature much colder than originally thought.  Scientist found that if you maintain a freezer temperature of -16 Celsius, it will take 80 hours to kill bed bugs.  If you maintain a freezer temperature of -20 Celsius, it will take 48 hours to do the job.

Why does it take such cold temperatures?  It turns out that bed bugs can lower the freezing point of their internal fluids when needed.  Who knew?
